I've been riding in SW Virginia over the last few days. Great roads. Unfortunately my son crashed, banged up but basically okay. After riding on some crazy twisty mountains road we were on a Virginia state highway, straight as an arrow, and he had a momentary lapse in concentration and drifted off the road. Enjoy the VA roads, but be careful out there.

Glad your son is going to be OK, Dan. Could he ride home? It only takes a moment....

Dan, I hope none of your son's injuries develope any complications. What a lesson we can all learn from this. Keep a focus on riding and leave the buttons on the phone and GPS alone. Things happen so quickly. I know I have been guilty of riding while getting sleepy. News of your son's wreck will encourage me to pull over and recover.

He is doing immensely better than yesterday. He's actually walking around although very slowly. He's got a couple small fractures to the pelvis and one to the wrist. Not breaks but small cracks. He's also sore as all get out. No way he could have ridden home. Most of the damage to the bike was cosmetic but a few important bits were destroyed. Still they totaled it. They offered him $200 less than he paid for it in May, so it's not terrible. Still he's going to complain that it was in excellent condition and very low mileage and see if he can get a little more from them.

He'll miss some work which is the worst part of the whole thing, assuming that his injuries are as minor as initially diagnosed. He is seeing a specialist tomorrow. He's mom drove down to Virginia and picked him up and took him to our place. I followed on my bike. I'm a bit tired now.

As soon as you find your mind wandering even just a little bit, get off the road and get a break.

Re: appalachianbackroads

VZShadow sorry to hear about you son. Hope all works out well for him. I broke my ankle last year early is season (July 10), and was very glade this season rides when well, with good rides. As we know riding can have a issue very fast. Hope he heal quickly, and enjoys many more years of riding.
