Honda Recalls 13 Models from 2013-2016 For Stalling Issue

45,153 Honda cruisers, sportbikes, dual-sports and baggers are on the recall list for potential electrical system defect.

The following report is filed with the NHTSA:

Report Receipt Date: July 8, 2015
NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V439000
Component(s): Electrical System
Potential Number of Units Affected: 45,153
Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)

THE RECALL: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 ST1300PA, 2014-2015 CB500, CBR500, CRF250L, CBR650, CTX700, NSS300, VT750, VT1300, 2015 CB300F, CBR300, CBR600, and 2014-2016 NC700 motorcycles. In the affected motorcycles, sealant may have been incorrectly applied to the starter relay switch, and as a result, the electrical system may have a loss of power.

WHAT COULD HAPPEN: A loss of electrical power may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

THE FIX: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace any affected starter relay switch, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870. Honda's number for this recall is JS9 and JT0.

MORE RECALL INFORMATION: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

I am surprised that the number of units affected is 45K when you look at the number of models involved. I would have thought Honda would have sold more of these.

It only affected certain bikes among those listed. For instance, I have a 2013 CRF250L, but my VIN is not one of recalls. Could be that they have several suppliers of that switch and only one of them screwed up.

My CB500X is in the recall. Here is a link to the recall instructions for those that are interested. If your VIN is applicable, then Honda will inspect to see if your starter relay is a potentially from a bad lot.

The same starter relay has been used since 1998 in many models and is available in Honda's parts system. It's $44 for a new OEM starter relay from Honda if a owner wants to buy one and install it themselves. That would avoid waiting for Honda to assemble & ship out recall kits, mailing out notifications, scheduling a day to drop the bike off, and have someone else disassemble my motorcycle. I inspected my starter relay using the linked recall instruction and it is in the bad lot. I haven't decided if I'll do it myself for $44 or wait and do it for free under the recall at some later, inconvenient time. It's about as difficult to replace the relay as it is a battery.
