Just in case you are from a state that doesnt yet have any travel warnings, there is a mish mosh of ever changing warnings out here in the west. For instance, in Montana, the gov now says the quaranteen of arriving Montanians and outsiders into the state is now in effect till the "end of the emergency" or a new directive, which ever comes first. The fines also vary from state to state. Its a $1,000 fine for a WA person to go to Idaho. So far, people are just being thrown out of Idaho back to WA. The Ban on WA people for Idaho is expected to end on June first or so, but all of this is subject to change.

The Governor of Montana placed an initial requirement for a 14 day self-quarantine requirement shown here:

Self-Quarantine for Persons Arriving in Montana

• Any person coming to Montana from another state or country for a non-work-related purpose must immediately self-quarantine for 14 days. If a person will be present in Montana for fewer than 14 days, that person must self-quarantine for the duration of the visit.

• Any person who has already arrived in Montana from another state or country for a non-work-related purpose before the date of this Directive must immediately self-quarantine for the remainder of a 14-day period beginning on the date of their arrival in Montana, or until their departure from Montana—whichever is sooner.

• The Montana Department of Commerce will advise persons listing hotels, rental properties, or other short-term rentals in Montana—including but not limited to listings on such services as Airbnb, VRBO, HomeAway, and related services—to include notice of the mandatory quarantine for travelers from another state or country.

• These quarantine restrictions do not apply in the following circumstances: o to persons traveling through Montana en route to another destination; or

o to public health, public safety, or healthcare workers

• These quarantine restrictions shall apply to Montana residents and non-residents alike.

• In addition to these restrictions, persons required to self-quarantine under this Directive shall also comply with the requirements of all other Executive Orders and Directives issued by me. This Directive shall not be construed as limiting the effect of any previously issued Directive or Executive Order.

He then sent out this current update for Phase 1:

The March 30 Directive providing mandatory quarantine for certain travelers arriving in Montana from another state or country and all of its terms are extended through the end of the emergency, unless modified by subsequent Directive.



 
In OH, the death numbers keep rising - not falling - so perhaps our Gov giving the OK for certain businesses to open is a bit premature? They did go down-down-down for a while then suddenly started to rise again and not gradually. From one day with low deaths it jumped to the 4th or 5th highest number since this started and it's stayed up there.

A small group of us (3 riders) are making the trek to a state park about an hour from here where we'll have our brown bag lunches. The other day, I did order take out food from my favorite Mexican joint, "El Sombrero," and really enjoyed it. I ordered 2 meals but only ate about 1/2 of one meal so the rest is in the fridge in proper containers. The owner, Ruben, of that joint is a great guy and has watched my kids grow from grade school age to the mid-30s. Every Thanksgiving he has a free meal of turkey with all the trimmings for anyone who wants to come in! I've never taken advantage of his kind offer but he receives lots of compliments from people in the town. :)

I just renewed my tags that would have expired this weekend, all though they tell you your ok to drive on expired tags untill the BMV'S open back up just beware that's only for your state they told me if you go out of state and get a ticket for expired tags your on
your own. Here in south west Ohio there is one BMV open but only for anything CDL related but you can renew your tags online.
 
Arkansas is relaxing it's controls on us. Still too early to predict much.
Barber shops opened up yesterday with restrictions. I got curious this morning and drove past my barber. It is very small, one chair. I think the waiting room (4 chairs) is shutdown so their were 4-5 guys waiting outside for their turn. I would sure like a trim but I'll give it some time.
I'm still amazed by how strange this all feels.

Barber shops, beauty salons, nail parlors are still closed for now. One of the ideas being kicked around is that customers will wait in their cars until their time, then come in. Our governor may open such places next week but who can be sure in these troubling times?

Most of the small town festivals have either being cancelled completely or moved to the Fall in hopes that things will be OK by then. :-(
 
I'm really surprised the virus didn't jump to Montana from WA where they had some of the first outbreaks.
 
Despite the “Give me my haircut or give me death” protests, Covid-19 has hit too close to home for me to ignore. Two friends dead - one near Detroit and one in Wisconsin. My boss called me last night and told me to work from home today because the plant where I work is shut down for a deep cleaning for the second time in a week because another associate tested positive.

Although I love a good pub as much as anyone I will be staying as far from public places as long as needed for this to pass or get under control. I have plenty of things to keep me busy including riding and sailing, and if my hair gets too long I can put it a ponytail and look like one of the cool Engineers.

Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and apparently Montana has been spared compared to Puget Sound Area. Not to say that it will remain so. It is a Pandemic, so eventually a majority of the population should get exposed.

The first outbreaks were in the Puget Sound area. There were several nursing homes that the same staff members rotated thru. Apparently the possible source of the virus spread thru the homes. Public transportation and crowed public venues probably did the rest. Spokane is about 285 miles east of the Seattle Area. Spokane County has a little over 500,000 people and 386 confirmed infections with 29 deaths. The County set up an isolation facility early using the main building at the Fairgrounds to safely isolate hundreds. So far only 26 people were helped and none tested positive so they are looking for an alternate purpose until the crisis is over. The medical service industry is big here and a main economic driver in Spokane. We are blessed with resources.

Almost four weeks ago, the Idaho Gov established a rule that if you crossed into Idaho, you must be quarantined for two weeks. It was the day before Chris and I went to Farragut State Park in N Idaho for a picnic by the lake. I think Montana has established a similar rule recently.

That said, everyone should assess their own risk factors. We have not been anywhere close to other people except the grocery. Then there is the decontamination afterward. I have an Eienstein bad hair day hairdo. Just because they open businesses, it does not mean that I will go there. My sister refers to people who are gathering as "herd immunity test volunteers".

A week ago, Dayton police had to break up a large gathering of "Herd Immunity Test Volunteers" who participated in a impromptu car show.

I live in a semi-rural county about 15-miles north of Dayton. We had the first covid-19 deaths on this side of the state and because of our light population density, it was shocking news. All the deaths (12+) occurred at one assisted living factory north of town, then deaths started to happen at another assisted living place but about 6 miles south. Turns out both facilities shared some of the same part-time workers. The total number now is around 30 and I believe most are still related to those facilities.

As local restaurants prepare to reopen next week, I saw interior pics of a local barbeque joint. Previously, it had booths along one wall then tables between there and the other wall. They had to build a divider wall down the middle of the room and more than half the tables are gone, plus they erected plastic shields for those people behind the counters. The new table locations only had two chairs. :-(

Our rural county (pop 10,000) has a total of 3 COVID 19 cases with one death for about 2 months now. But heading west to Duluth and Superior the incidence goes way up. Our biggest exposure comes from the people returning to their northern vacation homes from popular winter home areas with higher COVID incidence. Those people don't observe the 2-week quarantine for the most part. And the people who live in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Chicago and travel here for weekend recreation are the other big exposure risk. People don't stay home!!!
 
Covid-19 will not be more effective then the Flu vaccine.
CDC conducts studies each year to determine how well the influenza (flu) vaccine protects against flu illness. While vaccine effectiveness (VE) can vary, recent studies show that flu vaccination reduces the risk of flu illness by between 40% and 60% among the overall population during seasons when most circulating flu viruses are well-matched to the flu vaccine.

Population density is the friend of viruses. People partying in the streets of Chicago, packed house parties, packing restaurants in Colorado or flooding rodeos in N. California, all ill eagle, are what makes the virus happy. It loves nursing homes and veterans's homes. Here in Spokane, the cases are mostly in vets' homes and nursing homes...and about all deaths. Even in Korea they still have an issue with the young getting the virus in bars and night clubs. But you never know. The virus could get into Missoula or Bozeman and take hold. North Idaho has only 63 cases and no deaths as of yesterday. I think when we finally get serum testing for antibodies and covid testing, we are going to find out the infection rate is much higher...maybe 50 times reported figures, and the death rate is much lower.
 
I want the country to get back to work. I think it is tragic that the same people in CDC are not warning about not opening, where in January tells the country don't worry about Wuhan virus. W.H.O. has shown that it has major issues. Lets be careful, open and shield the best possible from Wuhan virus or any other transmitted aliment with washing your hands.
Wuhan virus will be here for a very long time, printing money is not the cure.
 
As of January 29th there were only 5 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the US and no evidence that asymptomatic people could infect others - now we know better. Hand washing alone doesn’t stop this from spreading; my plant works under FDA sanitation rules with massive hand washing requirements but the virus showed up anyway. Now we’re doing everything possible to keep everyone at a safe distance and constantly cleaning on top of a face mask requirement.

I’ll stick to takeout and cooking my own food, thanks.

I'll take mine in the comfort and safety(?) of my home. Besides, the local McDonalds doesn't serve rum and Coke.
 
I find the Japan's covid numbers interesting. Measures in Japan are voluntary. One of the main things different that I see is they wear masks (and don't shake hands). Still are far as I know, the trains, subways, shops, etc are still open. In Japan, testing seems to be limited to people in the hospital in serious condition for establishing a treatment plan. So the testing and confirmed cases numbers are meaningless for comparison. The death report numbers are worth considering.

US Pop 328 million - US deaths > 80,000
Japan Pop 126 million - Japan deaths < 700

I agree that population density is a key factor to the spread of a virus. The numbers below may vary depending on the source and the US has large areas of relatively empty space, etc., but still Japan is almost 10x the population density. How is our death rate many dozens of times greater than Japan?

US population density 36 people per square km
Japan population density 336 people per square km

I will continue to wear a mask and hope others do as well. I was disappointed that I saw perhaps 1 in 30 people wearing a mask at the grocery yesterday.
