14th Nat'l NT Rally - Jun 19-22, 2024 - Spearfish, SD

I got home at 3:30pm. I was ahead of, then following Yoda until we got to Chugwater, WY. He stopped for gas, I stopped for a break, then I headed out ahead of him. Yoda will likely stop for the day somewhere between Pueblo and Trinidad, then make it home tomorrow.

I’m home at Sunday noon. This trip was sort of a weather challenge. First 2 days were hot and then it turned windy while the temperature dropped. Winds went over 50 and the temps dropped under 30. First 2 days at Spearfish were nice. I left Friday noon because of the storm warning for that night and got into a motel just before dark in NE SD. I holed up in the motel until almost noon to let the storms pass. But I kept running into the rains which were supposed to move out but didn’t move as quickly as forecast. So I didn’t make it home Saturday as planned. Sunday AM ride home was uneventful except for the traffic.

The National Museum of Military Vehicles in Dubois WY was over the top. More than just vehicles, there were interactive displays and interpretive descriptions of military engagements from Viet Nam back to the Civil War. At nearly half a million square feet the place is huge. There are also outdoor displays.

Again

I was there today for 3 hours. It is wonderful and ever changing. Learned a lot.

They are now saying weeks and not days for Teton pass. The average house in Jackson Hole is 7 million dollars. Worker bees are using temp
Shuttle busses to get home and to work

Great visit with good people. Always worth the long trip!
I made a three day trip going to Spearfish, 350 miles average per day. Second day ended up in northern Colorado, little town of Cowdrey. The wide open campground let the wind howl all night. I wasn’t sure my tent would survive the beating. The Marmot Fortress 4 season lived up to its name. 33 degrees Tuesday morning made a cold ride to breakfast in Laramie.
Only Mellow beat me to Chris’ campground, just by a few hours. Nice to be able to choose a level tent site.
It was a pleasant surprise when Ken (Redbird) showed up in his car with tent and all. And even better when he offered to haul Jungle Jim, Coyote Chris, Jim Moore and myself around Spearfish for meals and a booze run! Bravo, Ken.
I received a bad text Friday afternoon from home that our water well had quit. Nothing coming out of the faucets at all. This was after a torrential 2.19 inch rain Thursday night. An association? Hmmm.
The remaining crew helped guess what the problem might be at Saturday’s breakfast.
So, I left a bit prematurely after breakfast for the grueling two day trip home. 989 miles in 2 days tested my stamina. Staying mostly on the slab helped. More power to Mellow able to get back to Dallas in ONE long day. Wow.
Monday morning at home I took a look in the underground well pit containing our pressure pump, pressure tank, piping and controls. Everything was jumbled up covered in a thick layer of mud. The water level in the pit had been as deep as 39 inches, upending the tank onto its side.
After 3 hours shoveling mud, Marge and I realized that all piping was still connected and the tank could be righted.
With all power disconnected, I disassembled, cleaned and checked the pressure switch and control boxes.
We held our breath and prayed that it would resume working when the circuit breaker was turned on. YES! Hallelujah.
Water from the well was flowing again to our house! What a huge relief.
Even though my annual trek was shortened a few days, it was still very enjoyable being with good friends solving all the problems of the world over a drink around the campfire. Hope to see even more show up next year!

Last camp :( Red cliff NFS campground Mt. Oddly, not full. Traffic light except for elk herd jam in Yellowstone.
