actual memory storage of trip- & odometer?

Out of interest, as I'm about to replace the smashed instrument cluster in ze GF's '07 NT700VA:

are the odo readings stored in actual instrument PCB or within the ECU?

If its the latter, it would save me the hustle of changing the clocks between the housings...
