As we go about enjoying our three-day weekend with family and friends, may we never forget that our freedom haas been paid for by those who answered the call to service and paid for our freedom with their lives. We should be thankful for those who are serving or have served our country for their sacrifices. May we always remember that freedom isn't free.

Semper Fi!

Amen. I usually watch WWI , WWII, Vietnam, etc documentaries to never forget the sacrifices made that make my life as great as it's been.
For me, I do that too but I am really into history so not a day goes by where I dont think about them. Last week I was at the Nat. Cemetery in Sitka....The Washington state vets Cemetery is a short ride from my house. Everyone has a story.... there are 12,000 stories from the Battle for Okinawa. 🙏

I bet I have seen this video 5 times but it never fails to move me. 56 minutes of rememberance.

I have seen all of the memorials in Washington DC. The Vietnam Wall is special to me because most of the "kids" on it WOULD BE my age. I know a couple of them. Went to school with them. GREW UP WITH THEM!!!
Whenever the Moveable Wall is near me, I go see it. I look at my friend's names. I look until I cannot see the names. A mist covers my eyes. I only see their faces. They never age. Gone almost 60 years. We should be telling each other lies (our memories) and talking about their kids and grand kids.
Rest in Peace, Hiesy and Richie. And the hundreds of thousands who have shielded us for centuries.

Well, now I can't see the keyboard.

Thank you Mike. I am reminded of how much we do not appreciate sacrifice of others.
This was a stop on a tour of Tunis, Tunisia, North African coast. This WW II cemetery and memorial was 10 miles outside of Tunis, in Carthage. The scholars among us can tell about the three wars with Rome (they lost the last one).
"It honors 2,841 American service members who died during World War II and features a memorial chapel and a Wall of the Missing with 3,724 names engraved." wiki
I did not know the cemetery existed. It is well built and well maintained, at least in 2023. We were on a Med cruise.

About a week late but I got here to pay my respects View attachment 22859
There are so many great places to visit....the cemetery at the Custer Battlefield is nice too, and interesting.
The actor Eddie Albert was called a hero by Peter Falk. He said "I am not a hero...the ones who didnt make it back are heros."
On September 9, 1942, Albert enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and was discharged in 1943 to accept an appointment as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for his actions during the invasion of Tarawa in November 1943, when, as the coxswain of a US Navy landing craft, he rescued 47 Marines who were stranded offshore (and supervised the rescue of 30 others), while under heavy enemy machine-gun fire.[7

To paraphrase Archie Bunker, "Mister, we could a man like him today."

Too many. Most were just kids. DAMN
Okinawa cost us 12,000 kids that will never be fathers. The cowardly UN has the ability to end war for ever. Any country that attacks another becomes an economic outcast. No trade. No relations. War reparations. WWII would never happen again.
