Am finally off the heavy pain killers and am allowed to drive. Am still not allowed to lift over 15lbs. so I end up with lots of light grocery bags. Will start PT in two weeks, which will hopefully include bicycle riding. I set my Cross Bike up for the crushed stone trail they recently put in here in a rail bed that was no longer in use. It is two and a half miles--a good starting point. I am not certain that I will ever ride on the road again. There are just too many distracted drivers out there and I don't think that my back could handle another hit like that last one. I am definitely going to be able to ride the NT. I have the flexibility to get on and off---all I need is for the back to build the strength necessary to hold it up.

Congratulations, Alex! I'm tinkled pink to hear of your outstanding progress and really glad that the pain is under control.

It is great to hear that you are making progress.
Pain is an interesting thing. I know from my own experience, that "phantom" pain can seem just as bad as the "real" thing.
Sometimes we have to retrain the brain to accept that what it thinks is there is actually not. That is true for many experiences such as phobias.
On the other hand, I have, on many occasions, injured myself at work (usually cuts) and not realised until I see the blood dripping.
These are just my own experiences.

Excellent news Alex! We will toast to your speedy recovery at Spearfish with a single malt in your honor.

Let us know how PT with Big Bertha goes. I am a big believer in PT, then home PT. Best wishes.

You are sure a tough nut Alex! You are gonna make it for sure. I have mostly transitioned from a two wheeled bike to a bike trike (Catrike 559). Although I still ride my single speed Wabi on occasion.

Tim said: "I have mostly transitioned from a two wheeled bike to a bike trike (Catrike 559)."

One of my neighbors is a fairly young guy who has major issues due arthritis and he just got a Catrike 559 and has been riding around the neighborhood. He really likes it.

My back got so bad, that I traded the NT for a GoldWing trike. Didn't really solve the problem.
Traded the trike for a Polaris SlingShot. The driver's seat is adjustable fore and aft, and the seat back is adjustable. Comfort at last, but still the open air and sound effects. The best of both worlds. Getting in and OUT can be a bit of a challenge. My rotator cuff surgery kept me from any form of transportation, except a car, for months. Back in (IN, not on) the 'saddle" since spring and loving it. Time and body parts may change our WAY of having fun, but we can still HAVE fun.

Good Luck.

Tim, Am familiar with the Cat Trike--looks like a lot of fun. I would hate to stop riding my "Look 860". It is such a sweet ride.

The Polaris Sling Shot is very popular here. That's a big machine--same size as the Miata. I get my jollies by rolling down the windows in the Shelby and hooking her up. The sound from that Borla Exhaust is like music.

If I may add my 2 cents worth here, I can't see the point of the Slingshot.
It is as big as a car, costs more than a car, is driven like a car (but requires a helmeted driver), has no air bags or air conditioning and limited luggage space. It does not have the security of a car (don't leave anything on the seat).
You sit in it, not on it and therefore your eye-line is lower. It doesn't have the maneuverability (no filtering) or parking advantage of a bike.
I expect fuel consumption will be higher than an equivalently sized car too.
If you are physically unable to ride a bike, I can understand the choice but cannot see why they would be popular otherwise.
Other than being exposed to the wind and rain, what is the attraction?

I don't know the attraction other than they have a "cool" factor and its something different that not everyone has. I would guess you would also attract a crowd when parked. Some people find that appealing.

I can tell y'all have never driven a SlingShot.
Ever have a ride in a GTO or a Nova SS 409 or a REALLY BIG Hemi?
Pick a really winding road, and we'll go for a ride. Just don't ride in front of me. (I wouldn't want to run over you.)
Don't knock it 'till you've tried it. I would think anyone who owns a motorcycle and has had to answer the question, "Why??" would surely understand the SlingShot. Guess I was wrong.
