The very first Gold Wings were conceived as sport models without much thought to it becoming a touring icon. As a side note, the first prototype GL was a 6-cylinder 1000 but it was decided that a 6 was a bit too much for riders of that time. Anyhow, Vetter made a ton of money selling front fairings for the "Nude Wings" and eventually Honda noticed so offered the Wing with a fairing in the late-70s or early-80s and as they say, the rest is history.
