On the way back from Devil's Tower, WY, JungleJim, and myself happened to meet up with Fossil at a very interesting place a few miles west of Spearfish. Out in the middle of the prairie, a 75 foot deep sink hole opened up hundreds of years ago. The crafty Native Americans (Indians) figured out a way to 'worry' the local bison herds toward the open hole in the ground, then stampeded them to fall to their death in the pit. From then on, it was just a meat processing facility of huge proportions. Archeologists from several universities have been digging and cataloging the 20+ foot thick layer of bones in the bottom of the pit for many years, trying to understand more about the process. It was a very interesting side trip that the three of us enjoyed.
