What is the functional purpose of the vent holes in the front fender of my 2010 NT700V?

I doubt there is one. They certainly aren't lightening holes. Just some designer's idea of style.
To cool the brakes, of course!!!! 
Probably just some guy's way of making cleaning more difficult.
Or, simply a fight between a designer and an engineer. Designers wants certain shape, engineer says no. Designer then puts in 'vent' cause it doesn't hurt anything and it will cut out some weight. Engineer can't disagree on functional terms so vents stay. And, yes, I have witnessed dumber arguments in a design review.

I have wondered the same thing. I had thought it was for aerodynamic purposes but it could just as well be for style since we all know what a stylish bike the NT is.
