I did see one noted guy leave a gathering on his high-mileage for a 350-400 mile ride with cord (not much) showing on his front tire. He'd ridden several hundred miles in the few days before he headed home and installed new tires when he got there. His story was that he knew how long those tires would last.

I think you made a good call in changing the tire. Rubber tends to get better traction than steel.
I know steel wheels worked pretty good on horse drawn wagons of the past but we have moved on.

If you flipped the tire you could have put some wear on the right side too.

JK. It's cheaper to replace a tire early than recover from a flat in an isolated area, or worse an accident.

Everyone has their own idea of when tires need to be changed but it's your skin so decide wisely.
