Coyote Chris and I took a slightly different route to/from Spearfish this year.
Heading east we crossed the Big Horn mountains using the southern route (US 16 Ten Sleep to Buffalo).

After Spearfish we crossed the Big Horn mountains by the northern route (US 14/14A).
The plan was to spend the night in Red Lodge, Mt and ride the Beartooth Hwy (US 212) and Chief Joseph Hwy (WY 296) to Cody, WY. The weather did not look good and the Beartooth was closed Monday due to an overnight blizzard.

Plan B: we rode the short way to Cody in between weather but in very high winds. The next day was beautiful so we left the baggage in the Cody motel and rode to Red Lodge for lunch via the Chief Joseph and the Beartooth. After lunch, reverse route back to Cody.

The next morning we rode the familiar 53 miles (US 14 Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Highway) from Cody to Yellowstone east gate.

TIPS: Plan for 3 seasons, maybe 4. Top of Beartooth Pass (10,950') was a pleasant sunny 44 degrees at 11:00 AM. Riding round trip from Cody without luggage made the ride more enjoyable (and roads x 2). Riding west from Cody to Yellowstone early in the morning with the early sun at your back and lighting the rocks and mountains is worthwhile. Also, it lets you have the great breakfast buffet at the Yellowstone Lake Hotel.

Isn't Beartooth a remarkable road. I've gone over it twice and down to Cody a couple of times also. Thanks for the posts and the reminder of how spectacular those roads are.

Thanks for a great post complete with pictures. That is a wonderful part of the country to ride in and enjoy scenery. Plus you two can enjoy the memories of that ride anytime you want.

Good job!

Gorgeous scenery! The Lord willing, I'm definitely gonna make Spearfish next year!

Thanks for the pix, Frosty!

The Beartooth/Chief Joseph Hwy loop is wonderful to ride, as are the Big Horn Mts (I like the southern route but we did both) and riding around Yellowstone
(espeically the ride from Cody to Lake Lodge). Snow did delay us a day at the 11,000 ft level on the 'Tooth and Yellowstone was packed after 11 am
as usual, but there did seem to be more people than ever...and lots of Harleys and adventure bikes as well as motorhomes.....
Sadest part of the trip was talking to some delightful Chineese college girls who stayed at our motel at Cody while working there for the summer. I asked them
what the biggest surprise was for them comming to the west for the summer was, and they said "Blue Sky" which can be hard to come by in China... :(

It was wonderful to see the forum folk that showed up again and listen to their stories...everyone's got a story worth listening to.
