This is from RoadRunner magazine. A long term test ride.

Six months and 6,000 miles is long enough to know if you like a bike, and I hate to see this one go. It's been a great everyday companion, taking me on everything from runs to the market to several-day road trips, and it's been reliable and maintenance-free. Styling on the NT700V is conservative, clean, and current, without a lot of gimmicks or design trends that will be outdated in a few years. I predict that the NT700V will become something of a cult classic with time, much like the Pacific Coast model has become.

I guess I might be a member of a Cult!

I agree. With the age of the sensible mid-sized "Almost ready to ride" sport touring bike dead and gone, there is no competition or replacement. We are in the age of the Adventure Tourer.
I still love my V-strom but I gotta tell you, that chain is a real PITA. Designing a fully enclosed chain running in a lithium grease bath for this bike would have been difficult, but I would have paid
and extra $500 easy for it.
(If we are in a cult, do we get to where Red, Silver or black robes at the next rally?)

Red , silver or black robes hell!! I'm still waitin' for the secret decoder ring Phil promised me.

<snurf>

I never really thought of myself as a cult type but here I am I guess.
I think the decoder rings come in the pockets of the robes.

Gee, Mike, I emailed you the secret decoder ring...didn't you get it?

If you leave NT Valhalla do you have your memory scrubbed, or are you too old to remember anything anyway. I will never learn that dame hand shake, harder to learn then doing a U-Turn on a narrow street.

I kind of like my BMW F800GT.

Just one more random admirer.

GT with Jesse-style dual-sport luggage. Reminds me of how 80's 'mullet' hair is described....."business in the front, party in the back". Or maybe that's the other way 'round on your bike.... ;)

I hope I can keep my NT running for some time to come...I don't think the wife will tolerate another motorcycle purchase.

Your bike is out of production, No? Unfortunately for me, the bike didnt work, but it sure looks neat! I rode it twice. I was too cramped and would have had to add a bunch of farkles, so I really cant call it "Almost ready to ride" . The throttle response was to off on for me personally but if BMW brings out a new 800 GT I bet it will have ride by wire and multiple modes. I like the belt better than a chain even though Frosty put a hole in his. I was amazed to find out from him one needs a special tool to align a new $400 belt. Still, if it were still in production, I would conceed that it would be a contender....although the list price with luggage is in the same ball park as a leftover FJR. Seems like all the contenders are out of production. :(

+1 on that. My other bike (NC700X/DCT) is chain drive and after 2-3 years, I'm finally getting the drill on keeping the chain clean & lubed on trips. This year, I always used my NT on anything more than a day ride so rear drive maintenance was non-existent.

If you look at the Yamaha Super Teneres, they have a tiny final drive and seem to hold up very well to the abuse so something along those lines could be fitted to a midsize bike....except for the cost, cost, cost. :-(

ps. Even an enclosed chain case without any lube would do wonders. When I first started riding a group of us all had dirt bikes. One pal rode a Bultaco Matador with enclosed chain and never had to do anything with the chain and it seemed to keep its adjustment forever, of course it had other Bultaco-related, mechanical problems!

If the NT becomes a cult item. Then you can get in to ride to the nearest McDonald's that still serves the McRib.

That's funny. I do too much 'dashboard dining', and the McRib is the one sandwich that is difficult to eat and drive with, because it's so messy. ('specially driving a stick!)

Just a few days ago I saw microwave McRib-like sandwiches in the freezer section. For those who need their fix.

Cult is relative, I prefer that to enthusiast. Cult is not always a bad thing. There are many good cults, okay Mcrib, maybe Mustang, BMW Airhead, NT of course, all good cults you might be a unaffiliated with. Sure this group is a cult in many ways, all good. I guess we need a official skull cap, or pin (no tats, please).

Plus one on that. The one bike I wished I would have kept over the last 53 years, my sleek red beauty, the exquisit Yamaha XV920RH, has the enclosed chain in the grease bath. It was heaven....

Seems to me like that is a 2018 model in the year 2018.

No duh... How tall are you??? :D

It's a 15 minute job with no special tools. There's a video of a guy doing it in his driveway in under 15 minutes.

The current model has a dynamic suspension adjustment, ride by wire with different throttle modes and traction control, plus ABS.

The short and compact Chris

Point taken. I actually found a few for sale...but very little road tests....I also didnt find much about the engine...is it the same?
"BMW’s F 800 R and F 800 GT have proven popular with smaller riders, and for 2017 both models are receiving updates and new color options."
It looks pretty much like the 2016 except for the EU compliant update and the traction control and most important, the ride by wire.

I got scared reading about how a pebble shattered a guy's belt, but it looks like you could do the replacement yourself without the gage and get going.

Anyway, you win. There IS a mid sized sport tourer out there that could be fitted out for people such as myself who are 6 ft 2 inches. With a few changes.
Or, for less money, you could get a new FJR and suffer with the bigger size.... ;)
