Just passing along rumor

This was found on Dueaville Facebook page. It seems Europe is missing he Dueaville too. I would be surprised if this is true, but heck I pass it along.

"I follow rumors that have heard about a new Dueaville 1000 based upon the new Africa Twin engine. Guess that the drive shaft would not a big issue for mama Honda..."

Re: Just passing along rumor

That would be a nice thing if there is any truth to it.

However, after being involved with several case studies with North American Honda. I can tell you from my experience that they do not allow information such as that to be just "Leak Out". Everyone that participates in any of the Honda's case studies must sign an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) and be sworn to secrecy. That information would be considered privileged and the "Leaker" could be sued by Honda for damages of projected lost revenue caused by the leaked information.

Honda does watch forums for this type of information and they will contact the poster with an immediate "Cease and Desist" notification.

This is a friendly warning and my advice is to distance yourself from making a post of this type. Reposting can also be considered "Tipping", which is covered in most of these NDAs.

Wow Paranoia, I have no connection with Honda, never have (oh I did work for a mirror company that made mirrors for Honda) and surely never will at my extended age. If Honda wants of to after a guy on Facebook for this posting in England, good luck with that. Do you really think Honda would care about such a vague post, then they have way too much money.

Re: Just passing along rumor

I would not call it "Paranoia", more like being cautious after signing one of their NDAs to get the privilege to ride one of their Prototypes for marketing research.

Honda is a multi-national company with an army of attorneys that their disposal looking to make anyone's life miserable. They do excise that right from time to time.

They are very protective of their R&D and Product Development Projects, which this would post would fall under that umbrella. If this guy works for Honda somewhere in the world, he's making himself a huge target by even mentioning the remote possibility. Vague or not, if Honda feels this to be a threat to them, they will take action on it.

I just wanted to let you know there could be desire consequences if Honda decides to pursue anyone involved.

From FB, so you know its just GOT to be true.

Re: Just passing along rumor

In the “age of social media” corporations also use this medium to “leak” information to judge interest in new items and upgrades etc.

So this could also be from Honda and they may want it to be circulated.

Re: Just passing along rumor

I suggested last year, I think, that Honda had the perfect engine for a new 1000 Deauville with the Africa Twin unit.
Honda have a long history of "reusing" existing engines in new models.
The NT engine was a derivative of the Trans Alp unit which went back a long way and was also used in other models.
As I suggested then, it should be relatively simple for Honda to change from chain to belt drive.
I don't imagine that they would re-engineer the transmission to allow shaft drive as it would be too expensive.
Belts have their limitations in dirty environments but are generally OK for sealed road use.
We would all prefer shaft drive but I don't believe that it will happen on a Mid-Size Tourer again.

Again, do not get your hopes up if this bike comes into fruition and if it even makes it to the US.

I would be on the fence regarding another litre bike. The last one I had the insurance was over $1,100 per year for full coverage because it was financed. The both my 700s are only about $300 or less each for the whole year. Something else to consider the insurance cost.

A 1,000cc NT would not provide a motorcycle that would appeal to a lot of us who are "Fun Size" and not tall, dark and handsome. There are a lot of 600+ pound, 1,000 - 1,200cc sport touring bikes to choose from.....but there really isn't much to choose from if you want an upright seating position/fairing/windshield/luggage and a bike that weighs around 400 pounds and has reasonable seat height.

There isn't too much that a proper 700-800cc motorcycle can't do well - but evidently they just don't sell well enough to justify making them.

Justification and good sense seem to have little to do with what bikes are introduced, IMHO. I look at many and just shake my head.
The NT COULD be made in a recognizable form with another engine and weight COULD be saved with modern technology. Remember, the NT design is a bit long in the tooth.
If there is a market in Europe and even in the US for a 1,000 cc NT that weighed 500lb or so and had an adjustable seat height, plus all the niceties like cruise and electric wind screen, etc
I'm in. I wont be able to horse the FJR around for ever and I dont want a BMW. Gimmi the shaft!

COULD Honda start sueing its customers? Maybe. I would be interested in seeing one of these Cease and Desist posts to a customer.

Would Honda sue a forum dweller for forwarding a post alluding to a new possible project?
That would be called "Marketing Suicide"
The story would make the Wall St. Journal and Honda would recieve so much bad press, they might as well jump off a cliff.
Honda is smarter than that.
Employees yes, customers no.
If there is a test case, I would LOVE to see it.

I have just started following the Dueav. FB page. Do they know how many Dueavs are in Europe?

The majority of posts on the Deauville UK page pertain to the 650 model since it's been around much longer. Posts pertaining to the 700 only started to appear around 2-3 years ago but before that they were very rare.

In ref to the rumors of a 1000cc NT, these crazy ideas pop up for all models/makes and I never put much stock in them. As far as I can tell, the 700 did OK in Europe but not great. By the time the 700 was introduced, the bloom had already gone off the rose. :-(

And the idea of Honda using legal means to go after someone who spreads rumors about a new model is pure fantasy.

I can sure you that it is not BS or a fantasy by firsthand experience.

As I mentioned before, I participated in several Honda case studies. After a couple of days returning from one posted a very vague thread regarding my experience carefully not to disclose any specifics of the item that I got to review. I also posted a picture of my bike in front of some shipping containers with Honda pennant flags draped on them at their remote test facility in the desert. I used extreme caution not to show anything else that could be used to identify the location of this facility.

Within a few hours, I received a phone call from the North American Honda Headquarters Legal Department regarding my post. They explained to me that I was in violation of the NDA that I signed and agreed to, which I did not receive a copy of for later review. A few hours later, I received a call from the General Counsel there at Honda. It sounded like the call was with a room full of people. He read me the riot act and said that they were considering pursuing for damages if I did not cooperate to remedy this issue. I said that I would do what to could do and fully cooperate to the best of my abilities. I was instructed to have the thread removed from the forum where it was posted and to contact the administrator of the forum to get that done immediately. Then not to post anything on the forum for 90 days. A few days later I received a letter on Honda's Letterhead signed by the General Counsel himself reiterating what was discussed over the phone.

I can tell you that I could have lost everything that I owned over that "Vague" post. The one in question here is a bit more specific.

Honda does take these things very seriously. However, they do not provide copies of these important documents to the people who are signing them, which is bad on their part. I have a few friends that work at Honda in Torrance, CA and they also had to sign an NDA and sworn to a higher level of secrecy as part of their employment with North American Honda.

The difference is that you were involved in a case study, and you signed a NDA.

There's nothing to say that this person that posted this information wasn't involved in a legit case study conducted by Honda. If he was, he's putting himself at great risk based on my experience. Even more so if he works for Honda somewhere in the world.

What do you mean by "case study?" Is that where they gather a group of enthusiasts to review a prototype? Or is it a legal case?

I know a few readers are old enough to remember back in the 1980s when the motorcycle manufacturers offered medium to heavy bikes all with shaft drive.. beeping turn signals etc...and you had choices to which motorcycle ticked all your boxes.. Honda- Suzuki - Yamaha- Kawasaki -BMW so many to lust after..Who decided to dump the shaft??? There is Nothing out there to compare...and this is the reason I still have my NT...I will not spend my money on any street bike with a dirty noisy filthy messy chain!..

I for one would NEVER sign something I did not get a copy of. That's foolishly putting yourself at the mercy of someone else's whims.
