According to Ford, they are to be used as trail sights in navigating tight obstacles, tie down points for anchoring canoes, etc. on the roof and as a limb riser anchor to anchor cables from the hood to the roof rack to deflect low hanging branches away from the windshield.

Thanks. Well, it makes a good story.
It's a sign that Ford must have an avid off-roader on their design staff or, (perish the thought!), they listen to their customers..

There main purpose is to raise the MSRP, and it works surprisingly well.
