A hiker goes through what is left of my Uncle's B17 in the Austrian Alps. Note plack in memory of the crew who all survived at the end of the video.

Yep...

recently watched 'Masters Of The Air' on BD....
(really hard to get that 3rd part of the 'Band Of Brothers' & 'The Pacific' trilogy...)

I bought it cheep on DVD. I had seen clips so I will refrain from cutting it to pieces when I watch it....its not the correct flight suits but the story that matters.

Well, its Hollywood... how else would you spread parts of history among the ignorant...

I also got Memphis Belle though...
Good point. Memphis Belle was a good movie, especially considering the 1990 level of technology, and despite its flaws. Its a people story. I looked and my Uncle did 45 missions over Europe. He went to some pretty hairy places, like Ploesti. I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Memphis Belle was made 36 years ago, and 12 oclock high was made the year I was born.

You are so correct Wendell. We Americans are of the “Out of sight-out of mind” mentality. Just this AM I was reading some history about what was going on in USA during WW II. (I was 2 years old then). It was affecting the lives of everyone. Now it seems to be a big problem if we have trouble getting tickets to a concert or there’s a long line to wait in somewhere. We are so spoiled, but at the same time so fortunate.

Amen, we are truly spoiled and that concerns me. If ever things go sideways, do we as a country have the moxie to do what is required to preserve our nation? Can we rely on our young people to volunteer to defend our nation as was done in WWII and to a lesser extent, Korea and Vietnam? Both of my sons enlisted and served their country, Mike Jr. facing combat in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Both are now in their forties. I pray that we stay strong as a nation and preserve our freedom.

It's one thing to watch the Memphis Belle trailer with no skin in the game but now I'm watching it and thinking about my granddaughter who is now on a destroyer and is in harms way...... It changes your perspective............. Wendell
Wish I had talked with my father in law about his time on a can in WWII and Korea....

I agree. My generation grew up idolizing WWII vets....now, for many Americans, Vietnam seems as far away as the Civil War. They are not taught history...and why placating Hitler was not a good idea and why we have to stop the next Hitler before 50 million more people die.....Most citizens of this country went to skool when Civics was thrown under the bus. They dont even know the flag code has changed and you should hold your hand over your heart during the Anthem....Including the current World figure skating champion.

I have serious doubts. People dont even feel like they are Americans. Mellow wont let me go into the politics of that but I am ashamed of about half of America. And the whole of the educational system. My brother in law is from Iran. The person on the street there has no inclination to hit someone over the head with a lead pipe and take their gun and start shooting back.
Sometimes, there are people like your kids who come along.
There is a figure skater who has joined the army and is in their sports program at this time. He is studying to be a chaplain....
I am glad I saw America when I did.
