What does that number mean?

This weekend I headed over to Deb's to do some pre-season maintenance on her 2010 NT700, non-ABS model. A few days prior I'd searched high and low in my garage and could not find my Honda oil filter cap wrench so I figured it must be at Deb's. Once at her place, I couldn't find it - now totally exasperated - so I ran to AutoZone and bought a metal cap wrench that fit the Honda filter nicely.

I started the engine on her NT and let it run for 15-20 min, then shut if off and crawled alongside the bike. That's when I noticed my Honda oil filter wrench still on the filter from last spring. 5042 is the number of miles her bike rolled without dropping my filter wrench!

Not a huge fan of cap wrenches. I prefer the pliers. They will rip off any spin-on filter on any bike or car I've ever had.

I have been trained on OSHA Lockout Tagout procedures at the current and last I worked company that I worked for. One of the steps after completing maintenance or a repair is to inspect the work area for all tools before bringing the equipment online.

Inventorying your tools after any job would be a good practice to implement on the next job. I am just saying. ;)

Yeah, that is SOP when working on Aircraft also.
In the case of our friend DF, I must say I do get distracted. What happens in my old age is that I tighten the new oil filter, and of course the crappy factory cup sticks to the new filter so I have to get a piece of wood, plastic, etc and tap tap tap with a hammer to gently tap off the cup to the rear, but before I do the phone rings or some other mini disaster happens so that I get distracted and come back to the bike and just put in the new oil. I can well believe the cup would stick to the new filter and stay there on her bike. I would gladly pay an extra buck to have a nut or ? welded to the new filters so that you dont need a wrench.

When looking for my filter wrench, I did check both of my bikes to make sure I didn't inadvertently leave it on after an oil change. When my boys changed oil at my house, they'd often leave the wrench in place so a few weeks later when I couldn't find it, I'd call them and asked for them to check on their car and yup, it was still there. I got into the habit of asking for the cap wrench before they left. :)

By the way, when I do remember to remove the cap wrench I just apply a tiny tug of counterclockwise force to the hex and it pops free.

I only use my cap wrench to loosen the filter. When installing them I just tighten 'em by hand. Interestingly and on a related note, I have discarded an old oil filter with the cap wrench still attached once.... doh...

:cautious:
