54,000 miles on the original brakes?

I just put on the sixth set of tires on the old NT at the 54,000 mile mark.
The dealer recommended changing the brakes.

I think that the Pacific Coast went farther.
Am I doing well or poorly?
I commute about 20 miles, mostly freeway and state highways.
I think that I am a leisurely driver and use engine braking long before the braking period.

Yours brake pads lasted a few thousand miles longer than mine did. Front pads were replaced at about 45K and rear pads at about 50K.
I'm on the 6th rear tire and the 4th front tire in 52K.
 
My first set of front pads lasted 71,000 miles; I replaced them and the rear pads (1st time for the rears) at 113,000. So, 71K and 42K for front pads; 113K for rear pads.
 
I replaced my rear pads just recently at 33K, and they really needed it too...fronts are still OK but will need replaced in the fall I'm sure.
 
It all depends on the type of riding you do. I live in a city and get about 2 sets of pads to a set of tyres!

In theory (provided all things are equal), they should be OK until they get to about 1mm. You can easily check them with a torch shone into the calipers.

I swap my front pads over at each service as the left ones wear more than the right due to the linked braking.

Like John, I too swap my front pads regularly (about each 12,oookm) to even up the wear.
Last time I did that, at 60,oookm they were a little less than 1/2 worn.
Most of my riding is on country roads and I usually brake gently so I expect them to do well over 100,oookm, perhaps up to 130,oookm.
They are now at 68,500km and look the same.

I commute in urban traffic with a lot of stop and go. I have to replace my pads about every 20K miles
 
Most of my trips are short, so mostly stop & go.
Fronts at 30,000, rear 32,000. Could have pushed them a little longer.

Back pads. 26700 milles. I do a lot of city driving. Front still have a little bit of meat but should change them soon for peace of mind. DC23048C-A59A-4767-97CA-31A0BDC96CDC.png
 
I replaced the front brakes on my 1st NT at 71,000 miles. My 2nd pair of fronts (EBC organics) were still doing good when I traded the bike in my 2nd NT at 139K miles last July.

I just realized that I have Horse a year yesterday. Today I added LED Lights I had gotten from Aerostitch -- the ones I got are no longer available and the low beam bulb wouldn't allow the rubber cover to be used. But since their was no evidence of the cover ever having gotten wet in its life, I'm not too worried about that. They sure are brighter than the old halogen lights!

Fredo - if you try and get more miles out of those rear pads you might also be looking at disc replacement!
 
Yes DirtLier that was crazy to go that far with those pads. I had no idea that they were that far gone. I replaced them with a pair EBC organic like Phil. I‘ll see how they feel and if I like them I’ll get a set for the front.

I find the pads on my NC700 have a shorter life span than I am use to. The lack of compression braking forces me to use the brakes more than I do on other bikes. Maybe the high gearing on the NC has something to do with that.
 
Speaking of longevity. I remember people with NC700's complaining of the short life of the Dunlop 609 tires that came on some NC's. I have a pair of unused 609's that came off a new NC750. I installed the front early this summer. Checking the front tire pressure yesterday, I noticed the left side of the tire was completely bald. That tire had 2300 miles on it. No wonder owners were choked.

The NC only has a single disc in front compared to dual discs on the NT. When I switch bikes, I noticed that right away! And depending on the year model of the NC, it's fitted with either a two or three piston caliper. The two piston calipers probably have less pad area but that's only a guess on my part. My bike has the three piston caliper.

How did you come to the conclusion that the NC has less compression braking than normal? Is your bike a DCT model?
 
I am at 100,000km (62,000 miles) and still have all original pads with 10-20,000km left safely.
Almost all of my riding is outer urban or country.

I just changed the front brake pads. They were getting to the end at 27300 miles. Replace them with EBC organic. I didn’t think that I would feel much a difference I was even going to get Chinese nock offs for half the price on eBay. But it really does. Not only it has a better stopping power but it has also a much better feeling. I used to say the the NT had just “adequate brakes” Now I can say that they are not great but “more than adequate”. Definitely a nice upgrade to do. Hopefully the last…..
