Can you do this on your nt700v?

This is in response to several questions and inquires:

  1. Each State has their own threshold for vehicles property damages to prompt a report. That threshold has been identified as at least $1,000 in California.
  2. Lane-splitting is one of the safest things for a rider if done properly and not in a reckless manner.
  3. Lane-splitting in California can be done on all streets and highways of all kinds. The rider can get to the front of the line at any stoplight if there's enough space for you to pass through.
  4. Engine revving is used in the place of a horn and for those who like to hear the sound of their own bike. I personally prefer to install loud aftermarket horns onto my vehicles and a few warning lights onto my bikes for attention-getting.
  5. "Mirror Clipping" usually does not damage anyone's mirrors and most likely knocks them out of adjustment. An inconvenience if anything. There is no need to pull-over in those situations.

I have never knocked someone's mirror off or scratched the length of someone's car in the last 25 years I have been lane-splitting. I did have two people in nearly stopped traffic pull out in front of me at the last second, which I did come into contact with them in the same morning. I did pull over and speak with the vehicle owners on both instances. Nothing happened to either vehicle on the first hit. The second vehicle actually damaged my bike. Their insurance covered the damages to my bike and mine did not cover the damages to the other vehicle as they were "At Fault". This was before the Lane-Splitting Law was passed and put onto the books.

Watching this video I do not think you can call this lane splitting. Lane splitting is not hoping from lane to lane, this is nuts and foolish period.n If I rode this this fool, I never ride near him again. No skill just not wise riding.

Yeah you or I wouldn't do it but it's interesting to see what can be done with the bike.
Filtering has to be at the rider's risk. Nobody in their lane is obliged to get out of your way. If the opportunity is there to do it safely then do it. If you pile into the back of somebody changing lanes that's your problem. The UK highway code mandates driving defensively and usually the person going into the back of somebody else is at fault.

Being able to split makes dealing with to many cages on the road tolerable..

Exactly. When this subject comes up, I always notice that the people with the most negative opinions live in places where it is illegal to filter. There are a lot of riders in California, and while my informational is mostly anecdotal, few of them find filtering to be the existential danger that riders who have no experience with the technique believe it to be. You should do what you feel is best for you, but when I find myself on the 405 near LAX, I will be the guy on the red Honda moving carefully past the stopped traffic.

How much actual experience is this opinion based on? Just wondering.

The only experience I have with lane splitting is what I see on YouTube - and I suppose it is the "extreme" and not what happens to most riders. However - where I live there really is no reason to take these kind of risks. My daily commute is done without any traffic delays, and so far when traveling on the interstate highways on my motorcycle the delays and jams are generally tolerable and I can sit in traffic and wait my turn like everybody else.

I also watch videos on Asian Scooter crashes occasionally - as it helps me to understand what "not" to do while riding. The majority of the crashes occur when riders are exceeding the speed of the other traffic, and driver can't see them coming and/or don't anticipate a bike traveling 2-3 times faster than the other traffic.

It appears that riding faster than the prevailing traffic really increases your chances of running into something....legal or not!

Not much of mine. I've tried it in California and it scared me. I've tried it in Paris, France, and it TERRIFIED me! But there's good statistical evidence in California and Europe that it's much safer than staying in a lane in stop-and-go traffic.

I'm still glad I live in an area where filtering is not needed.
I took a ride today looking at leaf color and had 2 people pull over off the rode to let me by in places that you cannot safely pass for a few miles. It is nice to see people thinking of others. Of course leaf watching is not the same as commuting to work when 1000s of people all need to be in the same general area at about the same time.
By the way the leaves in central Arkansas are very good right now.

Me too. That's exactly the reason I won't ride through Chicago but go through the UP of MI instead. A couple years ago I miscalculated my schedule and ended up going through Minneapolis on Friday afternoon. I was in first gear for about an hour and half the time with the clutch pulled in. Never again.

I have been doing it for 25 years or so. In the last 11 years or so almost 95% of the time daily Monday through Friday.

Not filtering is madness, heck you drive on the wrong side of the road! In Cities I ride in, you would be dead riding like that. BMW (CARS), Subaru, rides change lines with out looking trying to gain on space.

I agree with that sentiment except that we too ride/drive on the left.
Here in and around Melbourne, Victoria, I would have been cut off and abused twenty times by the end of that ride.
Many drivers here change lanes frequently trying to gain a few metres and do not look first or use the indicators.
I do "filter" which is legal here (as distinct from "lane splitting" which is NOT) but much more cautiously!

tatistics seem to prove otherwise, Clay.

In today's climate of such outrage at every little thing (and road rage) its just a matter of time til some irritated motorist opens a door or swerves and knocks you down. I would never in a million years ride between rows of cars on an active motorway

No disrespect to those who do it, but it just doesn't seem like the wisest choice to make while in motion

Just sayin'

In Texas, motorcycles are welcome in the HOV lanes
I cant see where a biker should have the right to disregard etiquette of the road just because he can. If you're stuck in traffic, too bad. As a previous poster said, folks are constantly changing lanes in traffic to try to gain a few feet

The risk is simply not worth it.

Yes looks like my 405 commutes to West Los Angeles. The NT is in its element splitting down the road like that.

I do it on the 118 to Simi Valley and back to the San Fernando Valley during the week. But alias NaTalie is down for repairs getting a new radiator and all new hoses. I am waiting on 2 hoses that I was shorted on my order to finish the repairs. Going on the 3rd week now.

Did you California guys get close to the fires or have much smoke blowing your way?
Those fires are not a pretty sight.

A week from last Friday the Woolsey was in eyeshots view of my work in Simi Valley. The following Saturday the air quality was "CRAP" in the San Fernando Valley where I live.
