To wrap this up: I adjusted the clutch cable at the handle bar. There was no free play in the lever; now there is about 1 cm worth of free play. No more clutch slipping.

Glad to hear that you found and solved the problem. Just a side note to anyone else who experiences clutch slippage....yes, check at the handlebar for sure, BUT also check to make sure there is some slack at the transmission case. If the cable is damaged/rusted/gunked up, the cable may have proper play at the handlebar, but not fully releasing at the transmission.
