Tires

Not sure where to post this....maybe under technical or under retailers.....but looking for some replacement tires for the NT, front and rear....Bridgestone, Dunlop, Avon?

What have you guys used? Heading to the smokey mountains in sept, thought I'd get some new rubber before the trip.

Any experience with the Continental Conti Motion Sport Touring tires....they are very inexpensive here in Canada.

Gord, I haven't heard of anyone mounting Contis on the NT. Chuck Henderson (chucksklrst on the Forum) has used Avons, but all the rest I've heard about have used Bridgestones (BT-020s, the OEM tire, some BT-021s, and way more BT-023s). Both PR2s and PR3s from Michelin and, as best I can recall, a grand total of one Dunlop Roadsmart II (mine -- on my rear wheel).

I have the Contis on my GPz and really like them. (may not be same model as yours) I certianly will not get near the mileage Rick got on his Road Pilots but the GPz is about 125 HP and tends to be rough on the rubber! They hold the road pretty good for my old school sport bike.

I've got a PR3 on the back but it is new so no milage reports from me.
I didn't like the milage on the original Bridgestone or the BT-023 that replaced them. About 7000 miles on a set. Most of my rides are very short so I am always speeding up or slowing down but am hoping for more miles from Michelins.

At 19K or so miles I am on my second set of tires mounted at the beginning of last summer. So far they are holding up just fine with some visible wear but still working well in both wet and dry conditions. Still happy with the Bridgestone 023's.

New tires make a big difference in how the bike feels. Any brand of tire will feel like magic when you replace a cupped and worn one.

My second set were the Avon Ultra Storm 2's. While they were good tires, they only went 11k miles before needing replacement. I have the Michelin's now. They are just as 'sticky' as the Avon's and almost silent on the road. Given mileage from others they are also a bargain.

My NT 700 turned one year old on June 28 and I just ordered new Road Pilot 3's to replace the OEM ones that have 18,000 miles on them! From my research I am hopeful that I can get significantly more miles on the Michelins and have better wet road traction. If only I hadn't broken my leg last September I think I would have put 24,000 miles on in a year mostly from my 122 mile per day commute to work. Absolutely love the bike, though I wish Honda made one with a 1,200 cc engine. Oh, and am I the only one who hates the key?

I bent one key in the first few weeks of owning mine.
And I think you'll like the PR3's, most folks here have been quite happy with them. Myself included.

Judging by the bikes I saw at Spearfish, this herd prefers PR3s 2 to 1.

Oh, to save you the trouble of looking/asking..... You also need to buy the preferred herd tent (an REI half-dome 2+). :tongue: While not quite as common as PR3s on NTs, 5 of 14 NT campers used one at Spearfish.

Uh, they do. It's called an ST1300. This doesn't come free, though. Much more expensive and heavier.

Looks like chillman sets the record for OEM tire wear. I got 12,500 miles from mine (BT20s). Replaced with BT23s which now have 16,000 and do ot appear to be anywhere near in need of replacement.

I mulled the PR3 and the BT23 when I made the change at 7500 miles. I went with the BT23 because my dealer gave me the exact price I would have gotten from Comp. Access. or M/C Superstore, and he had to order the front PR3 which would have taken a week and I didn't have the time. There are a number of previous posts in the forum under tires that I researched and at that that time, the concensus was you could not go wrong with either. Without disparaging any of the others (Conti's, Metzler, Avon, etc) I am VERY happy with the handling difference between the OEM's and the BT23's. Time will tell about the mileage, but I suspect it will improve dramatically over the OEM tires, or at least until I trade the NT in for a new bike, which is on the horizon.

I do not believe the rear 880's are radial tires or available in 150 width which means I would not use them. I think Phil might have used a 160 in the rear..

OK then, how about the Metzeler Roadtec Interact Z8? I think I might give them a try when my OEM tires need replacing.

I have Avon Storms II's on my NT700 right now and I am approaching the Wear Bars on the rear tire with almost 8k miles. The Front is about half way with about 8k miles. I just ordered a set of Michelin PR3's to go on the NT when the Avon's wear out. I like the Avons, ran them for years on my ST1300, but I think I want to try PR3's this time. I have a set of PR3's on the ST 1300 right now and I really like the handling and tire wear.

I ran a set of ME-880s on my NT. At about 12,000 miles, the rear, a bias-belted 160/70X17 (they don't make a radial in 150 or 160 section) was so squared-off I couldn't stand it any more. I went back to BT-023s for a while and then to PR3s. Now I've got a PR3 front, Roadsmart II rear.
