Love Hate Love, an Intro

There have been a couple weeks here in SoCal recently that I wish I didn't have to put thick gloves on for the morning commute. I thought those deflectors might be nice to keep wind off my hands, but I don't need them $130 much. I didn't realize they actually do more than that. I wonder if they could be 3D printed?

They certainly do help with that. Also, the heated grips that I transferred over from a previous bike, which also helps with those chilled morning commutes.

The air deflectors help improve the airflow away from the rider and the overall aerodynamics of bike. I have both a warm and cooler weather windshields that get swapped out depending on the season, which also helps.

I used the bedliner paint on my lids and like how it turned out.
Clint
Looks great. I got my EBay lid and sanded both down pretty good over the weekend. We've had rain so I haven't been able to paint. What brand bed liner did you use, and any special prep for applying to plastic? I've always thought bed liner is only good to apply straight to metal. Thanks!

I would recommend the Rustoleum Spray on Truck Bed Liner. Available at Walmart or Home Depot, possibly Lowes too.

You do not need to remove all the paint, just roughen it up a bit. Then you should wipe down everything with 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to remove all loose dirt and oils from the surface before spraying. I recommend that you wear gloves to prevent getting your finger oils on the parts you just cleaned and drying your skin out.

I swear by Rustoleum BBQ paint for everything, (my old KLR and my old Tundra rims) so Ok, Rustoleum it is.

If you are riding to Wrightwood, then you can swing by my place. I am not that far from Big Tujunga Canyon and then down Sunland Blvd. I will do the install of the latches for you if you like. My place is close to the I-5 and Hollywood Way. Just in case you are considering to take my offer.

Here's a picture of both NaTalie and NaNCy.
I'm ready for you, Brillot2000. The bed liner turned out excellent. Not sure how I feel about the reflective tape, we'll see once I get them mounted if I'm going to like it or not. I am so tempted to mount these and just duct tape them shut, but I really don't want to have to clean the tape residue, so I will be patient. Say the word B!

These look good. I sent you a conversation request to continue this further privately.

The bed liner looks fantastic. I had rattle-canned my last pair of big lids with flat black and liked the way they looked, but this is even better!

I expected the bed liner to turn out flatter than it did. I'm glad I don't have to go over it with a semi-gloss. Pretty sure my rear fender will get the same treatment before too long. Thanks!

I was able to take Brillot2000 up on his offer to install the luggage latches to my lids today. Boy am I glad I did, because I would have jacked those up big time. I would have had the wrong backing material, tried to use screws and nuts...would have been a failure from the beginning. Brillot2000 had the templates all ready to go and knew exactly how to tackle these things. There was only minor swearing for the 1st side installation, mostly because he had to entertain my dumb ass while he was trying to focus. Haha. The second side went on in a fraction of the time.

I apologize for no action shots.

Left side done:

And of course the money shot. The dirty fast one next to the clean one. ;)

I left with a bullet list of items I need to address. Rear brake pads being #1 and a new tire soon to follow. That will be my opportunity to bed liner the rear fender. Brillot2000's 1" bar risers felt perfect, so a pair of those will be on order. Next on my list will be to re-do all my plastics with semi-gloss. Oh, and a front fender mud flap. Too cool.

Brillot2000, I can't thank you enough. Great meeting you and I look forward to some rides in our future.

Brillot2000, I can't thank you enough. Great meeting you and I look forward to some rides in our future.

It was my pleasure to meet you and take care of this for you given the level complexity of the installation. Also gave me the opportunity to meet another NT owner up close, not too many of those going around here in my parts. We also got to review your bike and point out a few things like your rear brake pads requiring immediate attention. Then discussing your rear tire replacement choices. Seem like you were already up to speed on what oil to use on your bike. I give you kudos for that. You also got to get up close and personal with NaTalie and see all the Farkle I had installed on her. :)

This job is usually a 3 out of 5 in difficulty. Your bike had to make it a "4".

All things considering it turned out really well. You also left with a bonus of replacement H7 headlight bulbs in 5000K, 5500K, and 6000K color ranges for a more of a whiter headlight.

If you would like to do more upgrades to your bike and want to seek out an expert, you can come by anytime. Feel free to keep my personal contact information on file. Also, be sure to shot me a text from time to time to see how things are going.

Going out on a ride is a good idea. I am planning on going on a ride out to Ojai with my friends on the 24th of this month. It's a club's ride that I go on every so often, So Cal Norton Owners Club - Calendar. Hope you can make out to the meeting point and on the ride.

Sorry I never got you my pannier latch pics....they weren't where I thought I'd saved them.....but when you had an appointment with Brillot, I figured you were pretty well covered.

Did the headlight bulb replacement involve removing a lot of tupperware, or could you get at it though the triple clamp area?

You were a subject of one of the conversations that Norris and I had. Especially your previous "Hardware Store Hardware" comment on my first set of latches.

The headlight bulbs can be replaced by squeezing your hand into the tight space in front of the triple tree. The only challenging part is undoing the retainer hook for the first time. By the second bulb, you will get the hang of it.

The LED Bulb Conversion that I did is a bit more challenging that will require a complete teardown and removal of the headlight assembly. LED Bulb Conversion - Brillot2000. Reading through those post I noticed you gave me a hard time on that too.

No worries. I am still super grateful for the eBay find of a $30 left side lid.

And like Brillot2000 said, you can squeeze your hand in there without removing stuff. I did the top one 1st, and it was not fun. I didn't unplug it before letting it out of the spring loaded thingy (I am no engineer, did you notice?), so it was tough to unplug in the small space having to use both hands. Learned my lesson for the second which took no time. Super happy with the unexpected upgrade.

My brain has shifted to maintenance and farkles from wanting to sell and it's fun.

Rear brake pads and a throttle assist thingy are on order.

I'm just going to keep updating this thread unless I'm told otherwise.

What up B!

The 'hardware store hardware' comment was just that, a comment. If I say that the side cases on the old Kawasaki Concours look like Samsonite luggage......it's because.....well....... they look like Samsonite luggage. I'm just saying it doesn't look like vehicle quality, or like it 'belongs', looks-wise, on the bike. It's not giving anyone a hard time about anything. I was just looking for latches, too, and though I liked the low profile of the hardware store ones, I just couldn't get myself to do it......

The thread you quoted is the one place where I will admit to being obtuse on this site. While I didn't specifically criticize your application, because I don't know how excessively bright it may or may not have been, I used the occasion to rant about a pet peeve -- blinding others. So since you invited me to continue the rant on THIS thread..... ;)

When someone modifies their vehicle so that it puts out much more light that it was legally allowed to do -- and often the owner has an attitude of "I don't care if you don't like it, my right to be seen is more important than your right to not be blinded by oncoming traffic" -- that's just selfishness. There are some folks who put HID bulbs into standard halogen-reflector headlights; HID reflectors are tuned to match the bulb, and if you put HID bulbs into halogen reflectors, it is brighter on the eyes of oncoming traffic. They project a different pattern.

The old 80's practice of leaving your headlights on high all the time for visibility was somewhat OK when it was the old technology with a weak single bulb (35/55w?). But have you ever had a Harley come at you with 3 headlights.....on high? "I don't care about you, you gotta see me, m-f'er!" Car headlights are targeted so that they point down the road, not into oncoming traffic, and your right headlight will actually be pointed a bit towards the shoulder. Some of the new pickups have fog lights that are brighter than their headlights and have a broader scatter than headlights. If no one else is around, and one of those vehicles comes toward me with both headlights AND fogs on -- more than double the light -- and it's clearly not anywhere near foggy or snowy -- I will give them my brights. Hey, if they think they have the right to blind oncoming traffic, I'll give them a dose back. But not if there are others around who would be annoyed. If the fogs are brighter than the headlights, and you've got all 4 of them on, that's considered 'high beams' to me. So occasionally I will give a dose of my high beams. Same with the newer Cherokees that have SIX lights on the front, if they've got the daytime running lamps AND the headlights AND the foglights on......when it's no where near foggy.

For my bike, I am actually considering putting a couple of small 'driving lights' on the fender, the kind that are just marker lights and not lights for illuminating the road ahead. Only because with a single headlight, it's difficult to judge the speed of an oncoming motorcycle in the dark. As the little pea-shooter 'fog' lights/driving lights on an 80's Pontiac, for example, don't contribute much to overall light output, I would only add lighting that wouldn't be offensive to oncoming traffic.

I personally wish that there were more regulations on vehicle lighting, and that law enforcement were given means to ticket those using excessive lighting (add-on lights, use of fogs when it's clearly not needed, etc.) Right now, I think about all you can be pulled over for would be those off-road light bars on trucks. I've seen idiots that think those are OK to use in public, too. Those LEDs are made for billboards, they scatter light in all directions indiscriminately. A turd running one of those on the street will get some high-beams from me, too (if no one else is around to offend.)

And I have good vision. The dazzle of bright headlights is worse for older folks with weaker eyes, though.

My GTI has foglights, and I never use them. Only once have I had someone give me the brights, and my car has stock (and well-tuned) HIDs. My car has 'cornering lights' that come on at slow speed when you're turning a sharp corner, like at an intersection. One elderly guy gave me the brights for that at an intersection, but the cornering light it's something I can't shut off. He probably thought I'd turned my brights on on him, but it was just this cornering light.

End rant. ;)

I'll give you something else for context..... I like going for late-night walks around town. I get tired of cars that don't turn their brights off for pedestrians, as if blinding pedestrians is more OK than blinding oncoming cars. No, the retinas are the same. Pedestrians often can't repay the favor, however. So recently I went to Cabelas and got a small high-powered LED flashlight. If I'm in visible colors and reflective bits on shoes and jacket and a car doesn't turn its brights off, I'll give 'em a shot of 280 lumens (and that's actually kind of midrange for these flashlights). If I'm all dressed in black, I don't blame the oncoming traffic for not seeing me. If I see a pedestrian, I always turn my brights down. 'Common' courtesy.

End rant. ;)

No worries. The people here in CA and LA are picker heads with headlights or lack of at times. Super bright headlights and light bars full on going down the freeway. CHP is nowhere to found to do anything about these people. I get blinded every so often from oncoming cars. I flash my high beams at them to lower their beams, they do not even acknowledge the fact. It was like they were giving the finger to me for flashing them.

Norris, I wish you could have seen this forum a decade ago when it was really hoppin and Phil was thin! Many of us still have our NTs but have other bikes as well, or just stayed for the nice people. We have interesting rallys, too!
