Engine rough idling when stopped

I had the new caps put on two weeks ago. Since that time I have had it cut out twice. When it starts to backfire when I am slowing down, I know its about to cut off. It will do that about 3 times when I start it and after that it is fine. I am going to call the dealer again, the only problem its not consistent so I know they will not be able to replicate it.

Warren, you said, "$360 including parts and labor for the valve adjustment and the oil change."

That's a bit more than I was charged. I think they charged me $315. But there shouldn't be any parts for the valve adjustment. Were you talking about the oil filter and maybe crush washers? That's the only parts I can think of that you might have bought.

My oil filter, oil and crush washer costs $56 here.

Advanced Auto parts, Mobile One 4T full synthetic Oil. 3 quarts @ $10 x 3 quarts = 30 bucks + Walmart filter ST6607,4 bucks. Crush washer .50 Honda dealer total cost $34.50 Been doing this for years with the ST. Same filter for the ST and NT. You can also get Casteroil 4T full synthetic oil for 9 bucks a quart at Advanced Auto Parts. Save three bucks. Total $31.50

Not sold on synthetics for motorcycles. Rick and I just bought bulk washers and filters and I'll spend $3 quart on Valvoline 10W-40 for awhile. Not too bad.

Some synthetics are just fine for motorcycles. Rotella T (as someone said a day or two ago) meets the JMASO (or whatever it is that works for Japanese motorcycles. Mobil 1 4T works. Just don't get anything marked "Energy Conserving" and your OK.

Not for me Phil. Wet clutch.

Right. I know that. The stuff without "Energy Conserving" on it has the metallic additives that wet clutches need to survive.

Used those oils for 115,000 in my 1st Connie -- clutch was as good as the day I rode it home when I wiped out everything in front of the clutch. Well, maybe not as good, but functionally, I couldn't tell any difference.

BTW, this could turn into an argument. I have stated my opinion. You have stated yours. I respect your opinion. So, I'm going to back on out of here now.

It's no big deal either way Phil. You're probably rights. I've just neer had any issues with good ol' dino oil.

Just got the Plug caps replaced it took about thirty minutes. Rear cap reached from under the seat, front cap reached via radiator reservoir side panel. More to follow on performance differences after I ride it some more. The NT Bulletin did say "Units affected ALL 2010 NT-700V, 2010 NT-700VA" and also "change parts on all dealer stock prior to delivery".

I absolutely dread going to my dealer about this.

Does anybody have a digital copy of this document for downloading and printing?

I've been searching the internet but it's not up there yet. Let's all keep our eyes open and get a copy here when one does surface. I'll check my dealer tomorrow but I have no faith and I'm pretty sure it will take the actual document to get any action around this town. I'll take these part numbers with me. Wish me luck and I thank you.

I visited my dealer today. They said that Honda's computers show my VIN is unaffected. Then they gave me a copy of the service bulletin so I can confirm for myself that I have the correct plug caps. Because on the third page there's a picture of how to identify the updated part.

I don't have a scanner, but I photographed the pages. I kept the images pretty large so they'd remain legible, so I won't post them here - it would make this forum post take a long time to load. Instead, I'm posting links to photobucket. Here they are...

Here is a copy of the bottom of my receipt... Hope this may help!

This was my prompt to get over to the dealer though I forgot to print it out.
I decided honey was the best approach though I was very pessimistic about the visit. As it turned out, the service rep told my my claim to a service bulletin related to my woes was the first claim he had heard coming from the internet that ended up being correct. I didn't tell him my bike was OK or acting up, I just brought the service document to his attention and he found it in minutes. They are ordering the parts and will call me to schedule the install as soon as the parts come in. I love it when a plan comes together.
I'm heading to Big Sur in 3 weeks and though my bike is running top notch I just couldn't rest with this probability hanging over my head.

Well, I told my dealer that I know my bike is out of warranty and therefore, while obviously I'd like to get this for free, I'd be happy to buy the parts if that's what it takes. They said if it's needed they'd get it for me for free, regardless. So they looked it up in their computer, and said I don't need them. When I pressed, they printed it out for me and encouraged me to go ahead and check them for myself. I still have the plastic off, but it was 30 degrees here today and I was out and about for most of the day. I'm not going to heat up the garage now, but I will do it in the morning. I need to finish that valve adjustment anyway.

If you want to proactively deal with it rather than waiting for it to fail, you could open your bike up and check if you have the new parts, and if you do, you're all set. If you can change spark plugs you can change these. If you don't have the new parts, you could fight the dealer for them, and if you still can't get them, then just buy the darned things and get it over with so you can stop worrying. Two of these things at $12 apiece is not such a fortune that it's worth waiting for the possible failure and wondering about it all the time.

You said the dealer said there was a range or group of VIN numbers that are effected but the service bulletin said "ALL". Do you think your dealer will give you the affected range of VIN numbers?
ETA: Thanks a million for posting this notice. This is going to save some people a lot of grief.

I don't think they know the affected range - I think they punched my VIN into some system that queried Honda about it, and got back a yes/no on my bike. Honda may not be divulging the VIN ranges.

I called them on the phone two weeks ago and didn't get very far - I think I'd still be waiting if I hadn't gone in person. I don't know when I'll get over there in person again - I am at work most of the hours they are open.

I also can see why a dealer would be reluctant - they get paid .3 hours to do this, but I'd say it will take them at least an hour, possible more. The spark plugs aren't easy to get to. And my dealer said that they can't just hand over the parts to me to do it - if they got them under that service bulletin I'd have to bring it in and let them do it. I'm not keen to have someone there trying to accomplish this in .3 hours.

My dealership is known for things I'm not supposed to say about them around here and I was expecting a fight but they were as gracious as they could be. Armed with your documents and Dave's invoice, I venture to say that anybody here who wanted new spark plug caps could get them and get them installed.
Ya know, if it weren't for the collective I certainly would not have put 2 and 2 together on this one. Thanks to everybody's investment here.

I also think that saying I would pay for it if I had to, got them to sit up and cooperate more. It established me as someone serious about avoiding the possible problem, instead of just some demanding clueless whiny person who'd heard rumors of free stuff.
