URGENT Potential new owner to a NT....question on the availability of the fairing

SOMEbody, SOMEwhere has got the parts we need and we can always find them using the methods described above.

I've found that to be the case as well...with one major exception; plastic body parts. Plastics may last forever in a landfill but they don't last in good shape. The NT is ten years old now and the available used plastic parts are going to start to being problematic. Stress cracks, missing tabs, scratches, bad color match, faded and peeling decals, etc will become normal for used part as time goes on...:(

Maybe that will change with 3D printing.🤔

Are all the fairing plastic pieces painted?

Not everything was painted originally, for instance the mid cowl vent section, fairing pocket covers, and tailpiece behind the seat were black and not painted. The sun can be a bit rough down here in the south on the non-painted plastic. Mine got eaten up by sun while parked during the day outside at work.

Are all the fairing plastic pieces painted? I know the big mid cowl pieces are probably painted. But are the other pieces like side covers, pannier holders, and inside fairing pieces painted as well?

No, the side covers, storage pocket lids, rear license plate panel, and the cover above the taillight are not painted. They are their natural plastic colors of a couple of different shades. Most of these plastic pieces are prone to fading and turning many different shades of grey.

Thank you, guys. I think I am going to try and strip the paint off Fugly and see what I have. I can then Plasti-dip them if needed.

On another note, the cheapest place by far for OEM Honda fasteners and hardware is from one of my favorite bike parts sites in Japan - https://japan.webike.net/HONDA/NT700V+Deauville/OEM+Parts/6038/9000/mc/

The only drawback is you need to buy more than just a few to compensate for the shipping charge. For example, the saddlebag collar 19052-MB0-000 is $2.90 vs Partzilla $5.58. The special screw M5X12 90106-MBY-000 is $1.11 vs Partzilla $2.26. The shipping charge starts at $17

Sounds like you have investigated removing paint from plastic. I've never done it and it sounds a bit tough to me. The plastic would need the right chemicals to not weaken it and with paint on steel you can use heavy elbow grease if needed.
If your paint is solid it might be good to paint over it but like I said I am no painter.
Be careful and good luck.

Brad

I am going to try stripping the small pieces that are cheap to replace first. There are many different methods that are supposedly safe for plastics, I will just have to try it and see if it works

A new Honda seat is about $140 (cheapcycleparts.com, others). That seems like a bargain compared to redoing it yourself or getting a Corbin or other seat. I have ridden my NTs across the US a couple of times and never had any discomfort from the stock seat. Very comfy.

I installed a CalSci windshield on a Honda CB500X, and it eliminated the buffeting that made riding it at 50+mph speeds uncomfortable. I haven't replaced the stock NT screen, as I find it provides the level of protection I want.

Personally, I like the two tone yellow and grey colorscheme. Very unique.

Best of luck with the bike!

Thanks. Is there a factory low seat option that I missed? I am a short guy with 28" inseam, I shaved the seats of every bike I own 😅. I usually have marine upholstery materials laying around but this time I am out of the black one. Otherwise, the seat would have been shaved already

Russell's Sport Seat isn't low, but it's only the height of the stock seat. It ain't cheap either, but on a 7-800 mile day, it is more comfortable.

At one time Sargent had a low seat option for the NT. Not sure if the still make it however.

FYI, I am cheap  Plus, I have been reupholstering my bikes for a long long time. I have all the tools and I can lower the seat to the extreme, and add a gel pad for maximum comfort.

Just a quick update on Fugly's paint removal, I used Acetone to remove the paint on the unpainted small plastic pieces like the gauge panel and pockets. It is going well but takes a lot of work and time. It is going to be close to impossible to clean up the bigger pieces with Acetone, and I can't get the recommended faster Xylol/Xylene here in California. Anybody tried paint removal with Citristrip gel?

Try Jasco available from Home Depot or Lowes.

It says not to be used on plastics......almost all the strippers I found are not safe on plastics :(

...STRIPPERS.....ok, I won't go there. ;):rofl1:

SUGGESTION: search on body shop paint supplies.

Almost every car has plastic body parts that are painted - somebody, somewhere sells something that will safely strip the paint off plastic parts.

I have used the Jasco on plastics before, the old plastics from the 1970s which were quite different. It worked just fine for me. You want to get the paint to blister and then hose it off. Repeat as required.

Most of the plastics used on the bodywork are either ABS >ABS< or polycarbonate >PC< polyethylene terephthalate >PET< and many of these plastics can be blended together. Most of the black plastics used on the NT are made of polypropylene >PP<.

Your other option is to use Kelan-Strip Aircraft Ultra Paint Stripper. Most automotive retailers carry this stuff and possibly at Walmart too. This stuff as also worked very well for me over the years as well.

So far no luck finding the Kleanstrip aircraft paint remover at the local stores. Only Rustoleum aircraft paint remover

If you have an O'Reilly Auto Parts store, they have it, or can get it unless it is prohibited by the State of CA. It may have killed a laboratory rat sometime, somewhere...
