URGENT Potential new owner to a NT....question on the availability of the fairing

So, after some hard scrubbing with acetone, this is what the rear luggage deck looks like. I am assuming it is supposed to be black originally?

Yours looks like mine after the hot southern sun faded it out. I think mine looked worse than yours.
That is one of the plastic parts I replaced.

Brad

I see. It is probably normal condition for here then. So Cal summer sun is quite brutal. I will try to Plasti Dip it tomorrow and see how it turns out.

Plastic Fading: not on the NT700 (yet......I keep mine inside and fully coated with Armorall), but on other bikes (specifically on KLR650 faded plastics.......fenders, sidecovers, etc) I have applied Lemon Pledge with good results. Spray on heavy, let sit overnight, wipe off....repeat one more time. It HAS TO BE Lemon "Pledge", not a Pledge clone or other off brand. Works great on the seat too. I know the NT probably has a different type of plastic, but worth a shot (pun intended)??

This part also faded on my NTs and I replaced them with new ones and they cost only $12 each. That's worth not having to hassle with it, IMHO.

I’m sure that he has more than that in time and labor invested trying to recuse that piece.

Also, thanks for letting me know that was you I saw back in July outside of Jackson Hole, WY.

Yes, it was my test mule piece for paint removal and test paint. I figured if I destroyed it during paint removal process it is easily replaceable. The best price I found is $18 though, where did you get it for $12?

I checked my email for when I ordered one a while back... they might have gone up in price. Everything else has... Usually all the parts places are consistently priced.

Got it. For the record, I am replacing all the little pieces with new ones, except for the pannier lids, mid-fairing, knee vent, and fuel tank. I didn't want to risk damaging the mid-fairing pieces without thoroughly testing the paint removal process and learning to paint. The way things are going with sourcing safe-for-plastic paint remover, I might just sand and paint over the pieces.

$18.52.........shipping will bite you probably, unless you order a bunch of parts, then it becomes free.

I will be ordering everything together from Chapmoto, free shipping after $49. They have the best prices for most of the items.

Ok, here's my very first-time spray painting and I f'ed it up. Trying to make sure the edge/lip is painted and ended up spraying too heavy. Have runs on both sides.....lesson learned - only side to side spraying. Will have to peel it off and try again

Some hard learned tips on spray painting... spray many very light coats instead of two or three heavy coats. Side to side sweeps. Preferably hang the piece so that paint doesn't pool. Allow to completely dry between light coats. Keep the spray can well shaken, and turn upside down to clear the nozzle between coats. Consider finishing with a clear coat.

As the old saying goes, "Good Enough for Government Work!"

You did not have a good piece to start out with on the right foot. I personally would use it "AS-IS".

Personal advice (scanning but not carefully-reading the thread):

First, make friends with the bike. Find out if it's solid, and catch up on maintenance. A thousand-dollar throwaway may have issues.

Second...forget about original gelcoat panels. Just arrange to paint it in a color you favor. The plastic is already messed up; do it better, make it look well-done, if you can.

As time goes on, you may decide to either buy another NT, or spend money to buy original-finish panels for the bike.

We are way past being friends...........I had her naked, gave her a complete medical and now she is in the middle of a makeover 😅

I just hope she's not the jealous type cuz she will have to share with a bunch of old ladies

Shortly after picking up my NT in 2018 I ordered new tip over covers, rear tail cover, plugs, filters all for a bit over $100 bucks. Some folks thought I was a bit premature in getting spares but as we now know things change and we can’t take anything for granted like available parts and cheap shipping. In your case I would just get her running and safe to ride and see about using a can of plastic paint to make her pretty.

She was already running and safe to ride when I got her. Just not too keen on the LA Lakers spray can look 😅 It is now a work in progress. Will do a reveal when I am done with her total makeover
