Where did you ride today?

Nice early Sunday evening ride on the back roads in Ste Gen County, south of St Louis. I haven't been on the NT since arriving back home from an all interstate road trip over a week ago (too much heat, not enough stops), was riding the other bikes (NC700X, CB500X), but the NT beats them both for handling, at least for me. I am very comfortable in the turns on the NT with the Pirelli Angels. I need to sell a bike, but it won't be the NT.

Ride to Echo Lake at the base of Mt Blue Sky (Mt Evans)

Knocked out another 126 miles to add to the monthly Moto Mile total. Rode up to Echo Lake via Evergreen. Took a back way up thru Witter Gulch to 103 then up to Echo Lake. Had to show the NT1100 how to get there, as this was it first trip to the Lake for it. Here are a couple of pictures and the route.

Note: Sorry for the quality of the photos, as I had forgot my normal camera and had to take these with my cell phone.

My son and daughter-in-law went with me on a ride across West Virginia and Virginia from Ohio. Rode the Blue Ridge Parkway for a couple hundred miles and back. About 1,100 miles over a 3 day ride. Great time, great roads!!! I rode the NT700, they were on my old 1998 Ural Tourist.

If I wanted a classic, this would be it.

Where did I ride today? Wanted to do some cleaning on the FJR, so I rode it up onto my bike table lift and then over onto the floor. Very short expensive ride. Flayed the skin on my left elbow. The blood color matches the bike color.

I have been riding my bikes up on this lift for over 20 years now. and no issues. This time my outrigger box somehow slid out from my foot just as I got the bike up on the lift. No where in that instant to find another foot hold. You can see on the picture how far the box is from the lift. Sue's (Wife) home nurse that comes by three times a week for Sue's med issues, cleaned and dressed the wounded elbow. So no ER visits yet. Now the issue will be finding the parts for a twelve year old bike. Might have to go new and that will not be inexpensive. Fortunately it looks as if only the left faring panel is damaged. No damage to the left pannier. (pannier guards did their job), and the black vent panel. Mirror was not harmed, it just folded back as designed. It seems the mirror stay / faring stay was also unharmed. Canyon Gages help in this regard. Everything seem symmetrical nothing tweaked off center, but will know more when I get the panels removed. . As the old cliché goes "excrement Happens" I guess it was my turn. Might be time to fix her and let her go.

That don't sound fun at all.

Not a good ride Chuck. Sorry that happened. Try to do some good like cleaning it up and end up on it's side, bad deal.

This last summer, I did a dumb thing. My XT was leaning high side against the garage. I thought I could throw my right leg over it, gently work it away from the garage wall to get it out. My right leg didnt go far enough and actually pulled the bike over on top of me as I fell to the low side. I felt my head hit the cement floor hard and a pain in my left leg which had been trapped under the bike. I was lucky in that I had a mild concussion and a contustion on my leg. Nothing major with the bike. My balance at 76 isnt what it once was and I have to be more careful now. Love my canyon cages and sliders...and roll bars on my FJR. A guy in a big pickup knocked my bike over in a parking lot and lifted it up and put it back on the side stand and only later did I see a few scratches. It (pulling the XT on top of me) was one of those Aw excrement moments but it could have been oh so much worse. That is what the doc said when I stuck my hand into a wood chipper.....
Crazy winter here...warm, dry, but every morning has its usual ice fog. I cant remember when or if I ever changed batteries on my bikes so I have to go back to the maintenance records but the XT , 2017, needs a new battery at least.

Add me to the list here too. I was riding my bike (bicycle) on a wind trainer indoors 2 weeks ago and crashed. After peddling for exercise I was dismounting, cowboy style, and as I threw my leg up and over the bike the bike became disengaged from the wind trainer and I fell awkwardly backwards with the bike and half the wind trainer on top of me. I hit my lower ribs on the metal frame of a of a bed. After laying there for a few moments taking inventory of my condition I was able to get up. No head strike but rib pain was an issue. No indications of a hemothorax or pneumothorax but ribs were quite sore. Damage to the bike was a $20 derailleur hanger. I now have a "through axel" in the bike so that won't happen again.

Then a few days later I was out on my snowmobile grooming the ski trail and upon getting back on the snowmobile after adjusting the groomer I felt my back go out. I think the muscle tension from the ribs screwed up my spine alignment. Now I had yet another set back. Then following another week of light duty I needed to replace the argon tank of gas on my MIG welder. So, like any stubborn male person would do, I lifted the tank into my pickup truck. On the way to town my back reminded me that it didn't like that maneuver. But neither the argon tank or the snowmobile had any damage from the above incidents, just me. I don't know if climate change is a real issue or not, but I'm pretty sure there is more gravity than there used to be

You know, you are starting to scare me....I had to google "wind trainer" Did you check with an orthopedist about how good this really is for your knees? At 35, I developed "runners knee". The sports medicine guy smiled, shook my hand, and said just wait and it will bet better. The chondromalacia patella would go away. But it came back. So a surgeon said I had Patellelo fermeral pain syndrome and it would never go away but there was an operation he could do that might help. No. By 65, no one could diagnose the pain in my knees...I was desparate. I was within two weeks of selling my cars that all had clutches. Then, in desparation, I was prowling the net and found out military acadamy cadets would wear simple patteler tendon braces above or below the knee for running to deal with the pain. So I gawfed and took an elastic knee brace, rolled it up to the desired tightness below my knees, and the pain went away instantly. I seldom use them now but always carry them.
Every know anyone who had knee surgury?
I blew out 2 discs in my back in the State Patrol. One doc wanted to gut me like a fish. The real surgeon looked at my MRIs and said, "I dont have anything for you. The extruded disc piece is in a quiet part of your back and will shrink. You damaged a bunch of soft tissue. Do the home PT, wear a simple back brace, and dont do anything stupid like lift and turn. Now I work very hard at not doing stupid stuff but I have found that is I do something stupid to my back, USUSALLY a couple of muscle relaxants and a good nap is a good thing. Once the back is agravated, it is self perpetuating.
Yeah, I know its hard to slow down and do other things for exercise, but we arent getting any younger and things are wearing out. Even with neuropathy, I can still walk, at least for now....I dont want reverse rotator cuff surgury. My splitting maul stays hung on the wall.....
Lets all be careful out there....
Winter sucks. 10 days straight of ice fog......

It was so nice here this afternoon I rode to town to pick up chicken for supper.

Earlier in the afternoon it seemed a bit odd while I was walking in the neighborhood. It was 75 deg, sunny, I was in shorts and a tank top, and we still had snow in the heavily shaded places left over from last weekend. Just a strange combo to be that warm but still snow remnants.

Ya, me. Arthroscopic cartilage trimming about 20 years ago. Then both of my original knees went in the garbage can in 2023. Also got a new hip that year too. But like you Chris, I’m trying to avoid shoulder and back surgery. I gave up my competitive archery addiction a couple years ago because of shoulder pain. Each spring I start riding short rides until I build up muscle strength to support the weight of my helmet. And recently quit shooting rifles from prone position to keep my cervical vertebrae happy. I do pretty well shooting from a tac table on a good tripod. And I shoot F class too, but I don’t have a dedicated F class rifle. I use my PRS rifles and sometimes beat some of the F class shooters. Sort of like racing a sport-touring bike against a sport bike and winning.

If you need OEM parts, try Yoshi Parts they are usually inexpensive and very good. I have used them a couple of times. For larger pieces you may be asked, in a separate email, to pay a supplement for delivery as their checkout page only knows about smaller items... Delivery is about 2 weeks depending on Customs clearance.

Not a big fan of Chuck Yeager but he did say one smart thing. "You do what you can do" And adapt.
I am waiting on multiple cancer tests so I can plan my life but I think I can make the ralley. And Oshkosh. My terrible sleep issues make it all but impossible to get up early and drive 30 miles to have breakfast with them, my fellow shooters, as the drugs dont wear off fast. Same goes for making BPCR shoots. So I enjoy cruising to warm places and watching the figure skating at the olys (despite the cheating) and walk 3 plus miles a day. Lots of odd jobs to finish off the day. Some things to smile about. The power company has decided to not build an access road through my property along the southern boarder but instead to build it coming into the landing pad spot from the South. I have no idea what a 250,000 volt monopole tower looks like except that it is 30 ft higher than the current 125K volt lattice structure, but the map calls for a 100 ft diameter "landing pad" for the pole.
I have a friend who is a bit older than me who had two sports knees installed about 10-15 years ago. He was a happy camper. He climbed Mount McKinley, California, but since then, his knees are giving him issues again. He has even cut back riding his 3 motorcycles.... its life....

Update: Received the large red left Faring panel. Still waiting on two pieces of the seven pieces of foam heat barriers that go on the inside of the panel. The black engine vent has to come from Japan. Might be a while. contemplating doing a valve shim change as the last measurement at 50k miles, a lot of them were on the edge of spec. also the bike takes a few more rotations before she starts. use to start on the first rotation of the engine. FJR now has almost 65k miles. So we wait. she is deadline, half dressed until all items are here and I decide on doing the valve shims or not. Probably put her up for sale this summer.
