In mid-June, I placed an order for a large pannier lid with CMSL. They told me it would be early July before they received the part from their supplier. Today, they refunded the entire purchase price and all pannier lids on their website are now UNAVAILABLE.

Getting issued a refund drama free is actually pretty good. Look into the ending of supplier Bike Bandit a few years ago. You were probably first to place an order through CMSL for big lids in a while, and their stock prognosis wasn't super accurate until an order was placed.

Big lid supply dried up a few years ago. David Silver Spares would get them in on the regular, but when they stopped it was clear supply was ending.

You want annoying, order an All Balls wheel bearing kit from Amazon for your Honda only to be shipped one for a 70's Harley. Now I gotta stop by a Whole Foods so they can initiate the return.

Found a store in Spain that claims to have some stock. $68 more. Will let y'all know if the part shows up.

Bike bandit is gone???? :(
Amazon can be very annoying. I ordered an OEM "safe" chain for one of my chain saws and got a part number of a very aggressive chain from the same manufacturer (Husquavarna) that I could find no cross reference number for that it would even work on my saw. From Husquavarna. Finally, I got an email from Husquavarna that the chain was safe to use on my saw anyway. I got no help from Amazon in trying to return it so I used it and still have my fingers and toes. Ebay returns are much better.

You are right. Drama free returns are a pain but better than what could happen.

If you think about it, trying to get parts for a 15 year old motorcycle is amazing in it self. By law, a durable goods manufacturer only has to supply parts (not options) for 10 years. The ram broke on my Chinese log splitter and it wasnt that old and every part was available for that splitter except the ram.

As for CMSL, ...well...the did the right thing.... Romans 8:1

Well - the motorsport dealer in Spain cancelled my order - the part they had listed as IN STOCK is discontinued and not available.

As CMS is a 'trader', likely the origin of your problem...
Many dealers across Europe advertise their stock in a pool, hence CMS logs their availability rather instead what's 'actually' in the warehouse...

I would call or email David Silver spares and ask about the availability of the items, they are probably the best in ferreting out hard to get parts. It is my understanding that if Honda receieves enough inquiries about a part and their vendor still has the tooling and is willing to manufacture a smaller batch of an item, they will restock the small quantity to satisfy customer demand. I would suspect that if Honda does this, they will only be offered in bare plastic black.

I got a shiney new penny that says there is no way in Haidies Honda will get enough enquires to build a special run of lids.....I would say a motorcycle junk yard is the only place you will find them. The bike is too rare and too old at this point. It...the lids.... was a marketing scam from the beginning. If they had supplied the big lids as stock, how many people would have said, "Gee, I wish I had smaller lids I would like to pay $500 for them"
Cynical chris who now has his 3000 wet or dry.

You may be right about any further Honda production. I do suspect that someone in the European market will develop some replacement lids using 3D printing. The NT (Deau) was much more popular there and I can't imagine the Euro's scrapping the bike just for the pannier issue.

Mike

The NT700 was meant to be a commuter bike in the Euro cities, thus the thinner lids, to be able to split and filter traffic easier. I believe that the riding public saw this bike as a midsize touring bike so Honda manufactured the larger lids because of demand, low as it might have been. Remember Europeans do not take the kitchen sink when they tour and the cities and towns are much closer together. No need to take three weeks of cloths and food and tons of camping gear on an excursion.( like Coyote Chris  ) Just like the US NT1100, Honda gave us the basic unit with DCT to keep price down and try and get riders who don't like to shift gears or don't know how, Leaving the buyer to out fit the bike as they see fit. With or with out Honda Line accessories. Overseas Honda offers the different trim levels. More motorcycle riders there. Any marketing has to be looked at with the Euro flair. The US gets the left overs. I would not be surprised if our NT1100 is only a two year run here in the US.

I don't have the answer to the lid issue but it is sure sad that a motorcycle can be rendered obsolete from a broken piece of plastic. The mechanical stuff will outlast it by many, many years. Hard to retrofit other bags on the NT also.
Maybe someone will gear up and 3D print or something, sure be nice option if it was available/affordable.

I would be willing to put small lids on the bike if I could find two at a decent price.

Or one small lid. Lots of us just gave them away.... the English Deauville forum is much bigger than ours...they might have clues about a couple of lids available....

I have one more European source that claims to have a big lid. Hope to confirm tomorrow.

Just thought I'd update on more Amazon fun. So I sent back the All Balls Harley bearings I received, I'll call them item "Z". The original order was for All Balls Kit item "X". I initiated a return/replacement request through the website. I checked the "wrong item received" box and in a text block explained in detail what I actually received. Amazon sent a replacement item "X" which I received and was correct this time. I stopped by a Whole Foods and returned item "Z". Amazon received item "Z" and issued a refund of some sort.

Today I get an email saying I need to return item "X" , and what they got was an item "Y". If I don't return "X" by blahblah I'll be recharged in full. So I guess what happened is I ordered All Balls kit "X". Amazon's internal label they applied to it was for a kit "Y" , but the real # on the All Balls card All balls slipped in their package was for "Z". So Amazon thinks I sent back an item "Y", but in reality it's item "Z" as I described in detail in the text block.

For the life of me I could not find Amazon's phone number on Amazon's own website. I clicked everywhere even searching on Amazon for "Amazon customer support phone number". I had to get the number from a Google search. Anyway called and had to explain to a call center person what was going on. Supposedly is all good now? 🤦‍♂️
